The "QUARTZ" marking on a watch dial simply indicates that it is a quartz watch. It serves to distinguish quartz watches from mechanical ones, and has nothing to do with the brand. "Quartz" refers to the quartz crystal — the core component that powers the watch. When you see it on a dial, it's a functional label, not a brand name.
The History of Quartz Watch Development
In 1969, Seiko of Japan introduced the world's first quartz wristwatch, the Seiko Astron. Slim, remarkably accurate, and free from the need for daily winding, it quickly won the public's affection — and fundamentally disrupted the centuries-old dominance of mechanical watches.
At the heart of the Seiko Astron Caliber 35A lay the world's first quartz watch movement, which operated on a principle known as the piezoelectric oscillation of quartz crystal. This crystal vibrates at an astonishing 32,768 times per second. A simple electronic circuit counts these vibrations; each time the count reaches 32,768, it sends a pulse to advance the second hand by one step. This elegant mechanism delivers precise timekeeping in a thin, lightweight package — and it's the very reason quartz watches became so universally loved.

Because quartz crystal oscillation is exceptionally regular, even an affordable quartz watch typically deviates by less than one second per day.
The widespread adoption of quartz crystal technology supercharged the mass production of watches on an unprecedented scale. Compared to the era of mechanical-only manufacturing, production efficiency soared while costs plummeted. Today, approximately 500 million watches are manufactured globally each year, meeting the demands of consumers around the world.
